CHIPPING Norton survived a Gosford All Blacks fightback to win their derby clash 35-25 at Stratfield Brake.

Gosford trailed 35-10 soon after the break, but battled hard to earn a four-try bonus point.

It could have been even better for the hosts, with fly half Harry Sutton and wing Tommy Newell being denied tries due to feet in touch.

Gosford lost No 8 Liam Beesley to a leg injury straight from the kick-off before Chippy took the lead with a try from scrum half Neil Penny, centre Craig Korszewski converting.

Full back Tim Ellis slotted a penalty for Gosford, but flanker Dean Beauchamp burst through for a try, again converted by Korszewski.

Newell’s break set up centre James Barrett for Gosford’s first try, converted by Ellis.

Tries from No 8 Matt Dawson and Beauchamp extended Chippy’s lead, the former disputed by Gosford.

Korszewski converted these and Dawson’s second, but Gosford’s comeback began with a Newell try.

It was 35-20 after Ellis scored from a quick penalty and Chippy saw Beauchamp yellow-carded.

Flanker James Holburn sent Newell over for Gosford’s bonus-point try.

The victory keeps third-placed Chippy in the promotion hunt.

Matt Dawson bagged a try treble as Chipping Norton roared into round two of the Oxfordshire Shield with a 43-10 victory over a lacklustre Bicester side at Greystones.

Referee Andrew Graham blew up eight minutes early after Bicester replacement Simon Griffin took a blow to the head and was air-lifted to hospital.

Griffin had brain and neck scans, which showed no damage and he is recovering well.

Chippy went ahead on 18 minutes when No 8 Dawson plunged over from a scrum, and fly half Sam Jackson converted.

Bicester replied when Dan Spencer crossed over from a driven line-out.

Flanker Dean Beauchamp set up Dawson for his second try, then scrum half Matt King brushed off some weak tackling to score, Jackson converting.

Bicester trailed just 19-10 at the break following a try from lock Tim Phipps.

But Chippy surged on, Jackson grabbing their next score.

Dawson swept in for his hat-trick, then replacement Steven Wawrzyniak sped through for a try converted by centre Adam Smith.

Centre Richard Flather notched try No 7, Smith converting.

Chipping Norton went down 24 v 30 at home to Windsor in a game that ended in fury. The home side started poorly conceding an early try and penalty to go 10 nil down but battled back with a try from Matty king out  wide after the forwards sustained some good pressure on the away side, Adam Smith adding the conversion . Windsor then were gifted 7 points when Chippy tried an over complicated move in their own 22 leaving the ball behind, Smith added a penalty just before the break to make it 10 to 17 at half time.

Chippy levelled it early in the 2nd half with a fine forwards try Justin Parker adding the finishing touch, but were behind again with in minuets conceding 2 kickable penalties. The away side then stretched the gap even further when poor first up tackling allowed Windsor a simple try . The home side then rallied Parker getting his 2nd try after fine break from the Chippy backrow and really looked to be in the driving seat but Windsors old heads kept killing the ball and slowing the game down.

Then came the problems and yellow cards Chippy had a blatant penalty try turned down with the Windsor 6 going to the bin followed Chippy’s Ben Davey and the visitors loose head for pushing and shoving off the ball, Chippy were then awarded 6 penalties one after another all in the away sides 22. As tempers flared the ref lost control awarded Chippy a penalty and then blew for full time. The home side protested strongly about the fact you can’t end the game this way but to no avail. Chippy only have themselves to blame for not winning the game because of earlier mistakes but a spirited performance shows the Red and Blacks are finding some form at last.

Chipping Norton went down to Newbury 13 points to 11 in their opening league game of the season.

Chippy started brightly and had the better of the opening exchanges but could not convert pressure into points. With 20 mins gone Newbury struck first with a kick and chase the bounce beating the cover defence to put the home side 5 nil up and caught the red and blacks napping moments later to extend the lead to 10 nil, Chippy bounced back with a Barry Nutt penalty just before the break to make it 10 v 3 at half time.

Chipping Norton again had the possession and the rub of the green early on in the 2nd half but again failed turn it into points, Newbury then took control of the game and should have added to their total but some great defence from Neill Stannard and Simon Hawken kept them out. It was  then followed up with a fine scrumage performance on their own line and Chippy struck against the run of play to score out wide with a fine team try. Nutt had the honour of touching down but it belonged to the forward pack after not only wining the ball back they then put together 11 phases of play to suck in the home sides defence.

Nutt added a penalty moments later for the lead when Matty King was through and Newbury killed the ball. At 11 v 10 and moments to go Chippy should have hung on but a very harsh late penalty gave the home side the win and resulted in both sides finishing the game with 14 men Lee Tustin and the Newbury loose head sin binned.
